The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay opened on 12 October, 2002. It was designed by two architectural firms, London-based Michael Wilford & Partners and Singapore-based DP Architects. When it was completed, the theatres earned the local nickname of The Durian, as its form is reminiscent of the popular fruit.

The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay contains a 1,600 seat concert hall and a 2,000 seat theatre for the performing arts. On the third floor of the building is library@esplanade. A visual arts presentation centre called Jendela, which means "window" in Malay, is located on level two. Also located there, at the Esplanade Mall, are outdoor performing centres, and retail and food space outlets. There is an outdoor open space on the fourth floor of the building.

In June 1990, the Singapore government approved the decision to build a performing arts centre. The site chosen was the former "Satay Club" which has since been relocated to the Sembawang Shopping Center. A reclaimed site was chosen and architects from all over the world were invited to submit their designs.
